Manchester United 3-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers: Red Devils Stroll Back To The Top Of The League

Comfortable win sees United join Chelsea at the top of the league

Sir Alex Ferguson marked his 900th match in charge of Manchester United with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over a much changed Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.

Goals from Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Antonio Valencia saw the champions stroll to victory and go joint top of the Premier League alongside Chelsea.

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy controversially made ten changes to the side that beat Tottenham at the weekend and his new look side were unable to contain the champions.

Wayne Rooney had the first chance of the game after just three minutes. A shot from Darron Gibson hit Rooney on the edge of the box and the England striker found himself one on one with Hahnemann but the American goalkeeper spread himself well to make the save.

In the 11th minute Rooney had his second chance of the game, he got on the end of a low cross from Patrice Evra but was again denied by Hahnemann.

Wolves began to get into the game and had their first chance in the 18th minute. A long throw in from Greg Halford was flicked on by Stefan Maierhofer to George Friend, but the young midfielder fired over the bar from ten yards out.

United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak then nearly gifted the visitors a goal, he failed to claim an Andrew Surman free kick but luckily was able to claim the ball at the second attempt before Maierhofer was able to pounce.

After dominating the majority of the half Manchester United made their pressure pay in the 29th minute. A corner from Darron Gibson hit Ronald Zubar’s arm and referee Steve Bennett awarded a penalty. Wayne Rooney stepped up and powered his spot kick past Hahnemann.

On a rare foray into Manchester United’s final third Wolves had a great chance to equalise, Zubar raced down the right wing and delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area but there was no teammate in support to convert the chance.

United doubled their lead in the 43rd minute, another Gibson corner was met by Vidic 8 yards out who headed home. Hahnemann got his hand to the Serbian’s powerful header but couldn’t keep it out and the ball rolled over the line.

As the half drew to an close Gabriel Obertan was released down the left wing by Patrice Evra, the young Frenchman flicked the ball past Zubar before selfishly firing straight at Hahnemann when Rooney was in a much better position.

Manchester United continued their dominance into the second half. Obertan had first chance of the half in the 52nd minute, Rooney released the young winger but he sent his curling shot well over. Darron Gibson then tested Hahnemann in the 63rd minute but his 20 yard strike was comfortably saved by the goalkeeper. Two minutes later it was 3-0, a lobbed ball from Darron Gibson was flicked over his head by Dimitar Berbatov into the path of Antonia Valencia. The Ecuadorian struck the ball on the half volley past Hahnemann into the roof of the net.

The majority of final 25 minutes of the match were spent in the visitors’ half but United were unable to add to their tally, Patrice Evra having the best chance in the 85th minute. The fullback received the ball from Danny Wellbeck and fired his shot goalwards but Hahnemann made the save.

After a surprise defeat to Aston Villa at the weekend it was business as usual again at Old Trafford and after this victory United have joined Chelsea at the top of the Premier League on 37 points.
